Herbs for Anxiety

Anxiety Disorders can be chronic conditions in some people. They begin suddenly over an event and flare up to high stress at times. People suffering from Anxiety Disorders feel afraid of something but they are unable to articulate it. They have difficulty in controlling their worries and end up feeling depressed. In extreme conditions, anxiety leads to headaches, heart palpitations, dizziness, insomnia.

The Anxiety medications prescribed to patients mostly consist of chemicals that effect the activity of the brain. Prolonged and frequent usage makes patients highly susceptible to a variety of side effects and other health risks. Some medications are also addictive.

So wouldn’t herbs be a better alternative? Of course they would. Here are a few herbs that will bring down your anxiety without bringing down your health.

Herbs for Anxiety:

Kava Kava:

Kava Kava or Piper Methysticum is a good anti-anxiety herb. It also promotes sleep. You can find tablets in the market with the active ingredient Kavalactone which is an extract of this herb. It is usually prescribed three times a day with meals.

Valerian:

Valerian has been famous for its effects on insomnia and anti-anxiety properties. It is a good sedative and a powerful painkiller. Valerian root taken at bedtime is said to prevent panic attacks at night. You can take it in the form of tablets or you can also have it as herbal tea. Powdered valerian root when boiled in a pint of water for ten minutes gives excellent valerian tea. You can take it with honey before bed and have a good night’s sleep. It is also available in the form of oils that can be added to your bath water.

Bugleweed:

This herb soothes your nerves. You will easily find Bugleweed powder or herb that you can boil in water and sip as tea.

Catnip:

Catnip is an excellent nervine. You can take it the form of tea too.

Chamomile:

Chamomile is a effective yet gentle nervine. It helps you settle your upset stomach. All you have to do is to boil one ounce of its flowers in a pint of water, strain it and consume with honey.

California Poppy:

California poppy is a very strong herbal tranquilizer. It is available in the form of tincture and capsules.

Feverfew:

Feverfew is good for people who have anxiety induced headaches. It is also effective against migraines.

Passion Flower:

Passion Flower is a gentle sedative. It soothes nervous tension and also alleviates insomnia.

Peppermint:

It soothes frazzled nerves. It will calm you down and put you to sleep. You can take peppermint tea for Insomnia.
