Culinary Herb From The Mint Family
Herbs have always been used in the form of medicines and for cooking purpose. Mint is one of those herbs that has medicinal value. There are nearly 6900 to 7200 species of mints in the world.
Herbs from the mint family are know for their strong aroma and flavour. Some common species of herbs that are from the mint family are basil, rosemary, lavender, peppermint, thyme, basil and spearmint.

Peppermint: Peppermint is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint species. It is one of the oldest herbs and is know since 10,000 years. It is very high in menthol and is used to add flavour in tea, toothpaste, shampoos, soaps and confectionery items. Peppermint has other healing qualities like: making medicines for indigestion, stomach ache, headache, menstrual cramps and vomiting.
Spearmint:
Spearmint is a native of Europe and Southwest Asia. Its botanical name is mentha spicata. This herb grows well in wet soil and on all types of temperature. Spearmint oil is used in to add flavour in chewing gums, toothpaste and other medicinal products. This herb is well know for its medicinal properties like, headaches, fever, bronchitis and nasal congestion.
Basil:
Basil is mainly used in Italian cooking. There are a wide variety of basil but the most common types are used by American, French and Indian. In the Indian culture basil is termed as ‘ holy basil’. Basil is used to add flavour to soups, fish and meat and other than being used in food basil is also used in oral and dental products.
Thyme:
Thyme is a well known herb in the Egyptian culture. It was used in mummification of creatures and in Greek people used thyme in their baths and temples. The strong flavour of thyme is because of high concentration of thymol. It is used in many international cuisines and since it has medicinal properties it is used as mouthwash, to remove fungal infection and thyme tea cures cough
Rosemary:
Rosemary is a native of the Mediterranean region, Spain and Portugal. This mint is rich in iron, vitamin B6 and calcium. It is used to improve the memory, it reduces heart strokes and is good for digestion.
Lavender:
This herb from the mint family is used in aroma therapy that provides relief from health problems. Since lavender has a soothing effect it is used in curing depression, anxiety and insomnia.
This herb is very good for other health alements because of its anti-convulsive effects.
