Dental caries, also called tooth decay or cavity, is considered as one of the most commonly occurring disorders, next to only common cold. Though it is usually prevalent in children and young adults, dental caries can affect anyone. Normally, two types of acid-producing bacteria (Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli) are responsible to cause damage to the hard structure of the tooth. This results in deposition of sticky plaques which, over time, form tartar and finally leading to dental cavity or caries.
Herbs to Prevent Dental Caries
Herbs are considered very effective in checking plaque and tartar formation and restrict tooth decay. Some of these herbs are:
- Pomegranate (Punica granatum) for Dental Caries: The astringent and antibacterial properties of pomegranate are believed to respectively tighten the hold of gums on teeth as well as kill bacteria. This may treat dental caries.
- Indian Gum-Arabic Tree (Acacia arabica) for Dental Caries: The antibacterial property of Acacia arabica can help in getting rid of bacteria, thereby minimizing their damaging action on teeth. This may help in preventing plaque formation and dental caries.
- Five-Lived Chaste Tree (Vitex negundo) for Dental Caries: Like pomegranate, it is believed that the analgesic property of chaste tree may also help to tighten the hold of gums on teeth. This could help in strengthening the gums and teeth, thereby preventing tooth decay.
- Oak Trees for Dental Caries: It is suggested that the presence of tannins, calcium, iron, manganese, etc in the oak bark could help in strengthening of teeth and prevent bacterial invasion. Also, oak tree is considered one of the most powerful astringent and antiseptic. Together, these may lead to prevention of dental caries.
- St. John’s Wort for Dental Caries: Expert’s consider St. John’s Wort as an effective anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. Both of these properties might prevent dental caries.
Though herbs are generally considered effective against dental caries, one may want to take expert’s advice so as to avoid side effects, if any.
