Turmeric has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese traditional medicine because of its various healing properties. Scientifically known as ‘Curcuma Longa’, the deep yellow-orange colored turmeric is a member of the ginger family. Although, turmeric was introduced to Europe in the 13th century, only recently it has started getting popularity in the West. Today, turmeric is primarily known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties; for beauty care and as a condiment.
Health Benefits of Turmeric
Some of the health benefits of turmeric are as under:
- Turmeric for Arthritis: The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric can reduce pain and inflammation as well as neutralize free radical damage. These together can help in treating arthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.
- Turmeric for Cardiovascular Health: Experts suggest that turmeric might check oxidation of cholesterol in the body. This can reduce plaque formation and blood vessel damages, thereby preventing strokes, heart attack, diabetic heart disease, atherosclerosis, etc.
- Turmeric for Reducing Cholesterol: The presence of curcumin in turmeric can reduce the level of LDL (bad cholesterol) in the body. This may help in keeping check on blood cholesterol level.
- Turmeric for Cancer: It is believed that the antioxidant property of curcumin can counteract free radical damage caused to the cells. Further, curcumin can also check the spread of mutated cancer cells to other parts of the body. Together, these may help in preventing colon cancer.
- Turmeric for Alzheimer ’s disease: Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be caused by formation of plaques (amyloid A) between neurons (nerve cells).
