Benefits of Mistletoe

The term misletoe is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘mistel’, signifying dung and ‘tan’, signifying twig, together meaning ‘dung-on-a-twig’. Before the custom of kissing loved ones under the mistletoe became popular, Greeks used to treat misletoe as a plant having great magical power. Ancient Celts and Germans also considered misletoe as a sacred plant and used it in their ceremonies. According to European folklore, Misletoe stands for fertility and is used as an aphrodisiac.

Properties of Mistletoe:
Misletoe reflects the perfect synergy between folklore and medicine. Since ancient times, it has been used as an antispasmodic, purgative, excellent cardiotonic, vermifuge (killing intestinal worms) and diuretic medicine. Due to its various properties, mistletoe is used for treating convulsive cough, asthmatic attacks, arterial hypertension, for killing intestinal worms etc.

Health Benefits of Mistletoe:

Misletoe is a parasytic plant that grows as a hanging bush and reaches up to 60 cm in height. Average lifespan of this plant is 70 years. It has yellowish-green oval leaves that are rounded at the tip.

The berries of American misletoe are highly poisonous and have been reported to be fatal for kids. Mistletoe is considered a poisonous plant, so any treatment, if needed, must be conducted under medical supervision. Heart patients, in particular who take large dosage of mistletoe might be at a risk of heart failures. In addition, mistletoe is not recommended for pregnant and breast feeding mothers because of its uterine stimulant activity.
