Herbs are a perfect medication to effectively fight bad breath. From ancient days to till date people have been using herbs for bad breath, though the usage is less today.
Herbs contain antibacterial and antiseptic properties that kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath and other oral problems. Along with these properties they do have scents and pleasant flavors that mask bad breath. Even all most all mouthwashes contain herbal ingredients. From this we can conclude that herbs have the greatest potency to treat bad breath.
Here is a list of herbs that you can use for treating bad breath.
Cloves (Syzygium Aromaticum)
Cloves have powerful antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. Add three teaspoonfuls of ground cloves in two cups of hot water and steep it for 15 minutes stirring occasionally. Separate the liquid through a fine strainer and gargle twice a day or use it use as a mouthwash twice a day.
Anise (Pimpinella Ansium)
The seeds of herb have been used for thousands of years to freshen the breath. Even it has antibacterial properties that kill the bacteria that produce odor. Boil 2 or 3 teaspoons of anise seeds in 2 cups of water for 5 minutes, strain the liquid and use it as mouthwash.
Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum)
Cardamom is rich in cineole- a potent antiseptic that kills bad breath bacteria. Chew some 2 to 3 cardamom seeds for few minutes and spit them out.
Fennel
Fennel is has many beneficial qualities. Make a paste of fennel seeds, add baking soda into the paste and brush your teeth, tongue and gums with it. Even you can just chew the leaves to avoid bad breath.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia-a native Australian plant. It consists powerful antiseptic compounds. Put a few drops of tea tree oil on your toothbrush along with the toothpaste you are using and brush your teeth or else you can use a toothpaste containing tea tree oil.
Sage (Salvia Officinalis)
Sage leaves contain essential oils that have potent antibacterial properties. Chew sage or prepare sage tea and gargle 2 to three times in a day.
Filberts (Hazelnuts)
Chew few filberts that help mitigating bad breath.
Coriander (Coriandrum Sativum)
Coriander is a Cantonese (a Chinese language spoken in Canton, the surrounding area of southern China, and Hong Kong) folk remedy used for bad breath. Add few ounces of coriander to 2 cups of water, boil it for 5 minutes, strain the liquid and use it as a mouthwash or drink. Munch some parsley leaves after meals or foods/drinks that cause bad breath.
Wild Bergamot (Monarda Fistulosa)
Wild bergamot has antiseptic qualities. It is used in making commercial breath fresheners. Add 2 teaspoons of wild bergamot in a cup of water, boil it, strain and use it as a mouthwash.
Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is a long standing and popular herbal remedy for bad breath. You can easily get chlorophyll liquid or tablets in a medical shop.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Bad breath is caused by simple reasons as well as oral or dental problems or other health problems. The above mentioned herbs no doubt effectively treats bad breath, but it is important to check with your dentist if yours’ is a chronic condition to treat the underlying cause and avoid its fatal consequences.
