Guggulu Herb for Better Health

Guggulu, also known as Commifora Mukul is beneficial in several conditions by itself and it can be fortified with other herbs to promote some specific actions. Here are some health benefits of this versatile herb.

Commiphora mukul gum is greatly helpful in lowering cholesterol levels. It should be coupled with dietary restrictions of fat intake. This botanical gum acts on all the three components of lipid profile – HDL, LDL and Triglycerides.  There is significant lowering of cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The ratio of HDL/LDL is also found to be favorable. This ratio is considered as an indicator of risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Guggulu is a resin known to increase the white blood cell count and has strong disinfecting properties. The active ingredients in guggul are a group of natural plant sterols. Among these, substances called “guggulsterones” are the most important ingredients for the cholesterol and blood fat lowering properties.

Guggulsterones may also help keep the heart muscle itself healthy. When the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, a condition known as “myocardial ischemia,” it can be severely damaged by free radicals. The body tries to counter this with SOD, a key enzyme present in cells that neutralizes free radicals. SOD levels are significantly reduced in damaged heart tissues. Guggulsterones have been found to reverse this decrease by more than two-fold.

As antioxidants, Guggulsterones keep LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and this action protects us against Atherosclerosis. One of the Guggul’s main action is to help in weight loss. It acts best when it is coupled with dietary and exercise regimen.
