Do you want to preserve your fresh herbs without changing its flavor? Then you can freeze your fresh herbs. If the herbs are frozen properly they can be preserved for a long period and its flavor will also not change. These frozen herbs cannot be used for garnishing as they hobble when defrost. To your favorite cooking dishes you can add frozen herbs.
Here are the steps which would help you in freezing your herbs.
- Method 1: First important thing is to select fresh herbs i.e. when the herbs are almost ripe and the flower buds are about to bloom. You can select herbs like sage, basil, parsley, cilantro, tarragon, fennel, mint, rosemary or dill.
- De-stem the herbs and under the cold running water wash them gently. To drain excess of water keep them in a strainer. In order to remove moisture from the herbs put them over a paper towel.
- Now take a cookie tray and spread the herbs on it and keep it in the freezer. Once the herbs are frozen you can store them in an airtight container or a sealed plastic bag.
- Method 2: Repeat the first step of method 1 and then keep the herbs in ice cube trays.
- Add little water to the ice cube tray with herbs to give it the shape of cubes.
- Keep this tray in the freezer and whenever needed use the ice cube with herbs.
- Method 3: Wash the herbs and grind them to make a fine paste. Now to 1 cup of herb paste add 2 tablespoon of olive oil.
- Freeze this puree of herbs in an ice cube tray.
You can use your own innovative ideas for freezing herbs like you can make a bouquet of fresh washed herbs and freeze it in a cookie tray. Then store them in an air tight container or plastic bag. So enjoy cooking with frozen herbs.
